Florida’s workers’ compensation law: Some facts and figures

Florida workers' compensation insurance is in place to provide payment of medical expenses and wages to an employee injured while at work. Benefits are valuable, but can be difficult to obtain if an employer or its insurance company is balking at the claim. It may be helpful for workers to have a basic understanding of how workers' compensation requirements are generally applied in our state.

Generally speaking, most folks connect post-traumatic stress disorder with soldiers and veterans. It is a common term in public forums, and is understandably concerning to military families and their friends. But the term also encompasses many other causes besides war participation. Any traumatic event in a person's life can cause PTSD. According to a workers' compensation commission decision, that can include a workplace injury as well.

Starting a new job can be exciting, especially for young workers. Training plays an important role in the long-term success of any employee. In some industries, good safety training can mean the difference between a long career and a workplace injury or death. One Florida company is being cited by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for safety violations following the death of an 18-year-old worker.

In higher-risk occupations like construction and industrial work, every attempt is made to keep workers as safe as possible. However, despite all precautions, sometimes a worker can get injured on the job. While the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and company safety procedures help to assure a safe workplace, Mother Nature is not always so cooperative. Florida has many unique environmental risks such as flooding, hurricanes, extreme heat and sinkholes. It can be hard to always ensure that workers are safe from these risks, even when appropriate precautions are taken.

Florida workers deserve to feel safe at their place of employment. While some jobs are more inherently dangerous than others -- like construction work -- employers are still responsible for taking all possible safety precautions to minimize the risk to workers. Unfortunately, sometimes accidents happen on the job.
