What are some common swimming pool injuries?

It's that time of the year again when many of us here in Panama City will be hanging out by the pool to keep cool during the dog days of the summer. While swimming pools can be a lot of fun in the summer, they're also very dangerous -- particularly for children.

Data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that children ages one through four are incredibly vulnerable to accidentally drowning. Kids between the ages of one and 14 often drown in swimming pools as well. The CDC's statistics show that drowning is the second-leading reason for unintentional injuries among this population.

Additional data compiled by the CDC also shows that four children go to the emergency rooms for submersion injuries for every child that dies from drowning.

Some of the most common non-fatal types of injuries associated with swimming pools are disembowelment, or internal organ protrusion as well as submersion and traumatic brain injuries. It's not uncommon for individuals to unintentionally strike their heads on a diving board or decking around the pool. Pool jets and drains are also very dangerous as their suction force can eviscerate, or cut and extract internal organs, from a patient's body.

It can be fun to go and spend time at a Florida swimming pool. Children should never be left to their own devices around water, however. They may not have an adequate intuition to know how to swim to escape a harrowing situation. If your child is injured, a personal injury attorney can help you hold any negligent parties accountable for their actions.
