Most Americans believe that they should adjust their side-view mirrors in a way that allows them to see along the side of their car when they look in them. However, you already know that the side of your car is there. It’s not going to disappear, and you’re certainly not going to collide with it.
In fact, what you need is to widen the visibility that’s available by turning your side-view mirrors outward a little. Don’t worry if you can’t see the sides of your car anymore. By widening the field of view, you will eliminate your so-called “blind spots,” or at the very least, you will significantly reduce their size. This means that you won’t have to crane your neck as far each time you want to change lanes. It also means that you’ll be more aware of your surroundings and far less likely to be involved in a serious — and potentially fatal — auto collision.
