Surprising advice for adjusting your side-view vehicle mirrors

Do you remember when you first started learning how to drive? Your parents probably taught you the most common advice for properly adjusting your side-view mirrors. Unfortunately, this advice was wrong, and it could be putting you and your passengers in unnecessary danger on the road.

Most Americans believe that they should adjust their side-view mirrors in a way that allows them to see along the side of their car when they look in them. However, you already know that the side of your car is there. It's not going to disappear, and you're certainly not going to collide with it.

In fact, what you need is to widen the visibility that's available by turning your side-view mirrors outward a little. Don't worry if you can't see the sides of your car anymore. By widening the field of view, you will eliminate your so-called "blind spots," or at the very least, you will significantly reduce their size. This means that you won't have to crane your neck as far each time you want to change lanes. It also means that you'll be more aware of your surroundings and far less likely to be involved in a serious -- and potentially fatal -- auto collision.

Unfortunately, there are only so many tips for staying safe on the road, and none of them will fully protect us from an unlawful or negligent motorist. If you or a family member was seriously hurt or killed by such a driver, find out about your legal rights and options for seeking justice and compensation in court.
