See someone texting? Here's what you should do

Texting and driving is extremely dangerous, but for the most part, it's hard to know if someone is texting until after a crash occurred. Unless you see them doing so, there's little way to prove that they were on their phones.

One thing you might be asking, though, is what you can do if you do see someone texting and driving. Here is a simple way to handle the situation.

One option is to let the individual know that you see him or her texting. On the whole, this has a potential to get a person to put down the phone, but there could be a bad reaction, too.

Depending on the individual and how you approach the situation, this can come off aggressive or helpful. If the driver has moved out of his or her lane or nearly caused an accident, honking and signing to put down the phone is probably acceptable. Honking and doing the same when the person has caused no problem yet could make him or her aggravated. Also, remember where you do it matters. If you distract the driver before an intersection, for instance, it could actually be you who causes him or her to go through the red light or cause a crash.

The reality is that trying to handle the individual's behaviors isn't really your job. What you should do instead is call 911 or the police to let them know about a dangerous driver. The police can take down the license plate number and pull the person over.

If the driver is dangerous to you or others, get out of the way and pull over. Let him or her pass. It isn't worth getting into a crash.
