Man sentenced to 20 years for DUI crash that killed 1

When a person drives after drinking, he or she can cause serious accidents. The driver doesn't have full control of his or her faculties, which means that he or she may be unable to stop quickly or make split-second decisions like he or she may have when sober.

Unfortunately, driving while intoxicated caused a serious crash in this case, and the driver now has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. According to the June 15 news report, the man was traveling at over 100 mph when he hit a delivery truck as it attempted to turn a corner.

The man's passenger was killed, and the two men inside the truck were seriously injured. The now-34-year-old man pleaded no contest to charges including two counts of DUI manslaughter with serious bodily injury, DUI manslaughter, grand theft and tampering with court ordered electronic monitoring equipment. In total, he faces 20 years in prison.

At the time of the crash, the man had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .125, according to records released by the investigators. He was driving between 104 and 109 mph and accelerating when he struck the delivery truck after running a red light.

His vehicle continued on another 374 feet before it came to a stop. Shockingly, his passenger was the only person killed. Reports showed that the man had also ingested alprazolam, morphine and nordiazepam with the alcohol in his system.

Crashes like this one are completely avoidable if people simply don't get behind the wheel drunk. If you're struck or lose a loved one in this way, you can file a lawsuit to seek compensation.
